You're not his girlfriend. He's not your boyfriend. To phrase it, dating is more like when you're 'talking' to someone. Dating doesn't(shouldn't) involve possessiveness because dating doesn't classify under an official relationship. There are boundaries. There are lines that may or may not be crossed. Dating keeps your options open, for both ends. Dating is the definite uncertainty of two people interested in each other with two paths offered at all times. Dating could either lead you to a relationship, or it could lead you to saying Adieu! to each other, letting go, then moving on (unless you didn't comprehend what just happened then you may be wallowing and sulking and/or bitching). Dating remains indefinite until you've taken one of the two paths. Dating is part of the big, big process. Dating is part of the journey. Dating means you make your decisions based on what YOU want with out being tied to the other person.
Dating is not the same as being a relationship.
